Risk Factors Overview

Lt Col Phillips
Obesity is most often the result of a lack of energy balance. In other words, when the amount of energy, in the form of food, taken in by the body is consistently more than the amount of energy used by the body, the result is weight gain. This energy is most often measured in calories.

The more calories a food has, the more energy it can provide to the body. The body uses or burns calories through activity, and calories that don’t get used are stored as body fat.

Risk factors for obesity are things that make it more likely for a person to lack energy balance. These risk factors include genetics, lifestyle, inactivity, diet, age, certain medications, smoking, and lack of sleep. There are also social and economic factors that can affect energy balance.
